The Tramway is one of Scotland's most important arts venues and regularly hosts shows of international significance. For many Southsiders, though, it is equally important as a pleasant place to drop into on a regular and casual basis, and the cafe bar is a major part of the attraction. An airy, open space with a huge sliding glass door, which in good weather opens directly on to the charming Hidden Gardens, it offers comfortable low sofas for lolling about over coffee, together with conventional tables and chairs for more serious eating. On the menu is an appealing range of fresh, healthy, well-prepared food with a gentle inclination to Mediterranean flavours and vegetarian ingredients. There are a few meat dishes, including a lamb burger and a roast chicken sandwich, but herbivores are particularly well looked after with a roast vegetable tagine (with a significant spice kick), an all-day veggie breakfast, and pasta with wild mushrooms and spinach. With main courses at around a fiver and healthy kids' meals from a couple of pounds, it offers excellent value for money.
- High point: Hearty, wholesome food at good-value prices
- Low point: The menu is pretty short
