Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

The Filling Station undoubtedly benefits from its location on a busy stretch of Renfield Street – so much so that it is often bustling, right through the week. Being a US-themed restaurant, there are naturally the obligatory 'motel', 'gas station' and 'Route 66'-type signs decorating the interior, while seating is arranged into booths. The epic menu is split into sections of pizzas, pastas, fajitas, burgers, steaks, sandwiches, salads and house specials. Vegetarians may find picking their dishes a quicker proposition: there are limited meat-free options. The pizzas and calzone are well-made, with a nice thin crust, lots of mozzarella and generous toppings. The burgers are served rather bare, without any side salad or garnish, and accompanied by a simple portion of chips. Not very American that. The menu helpfully highlights signature dishes, such as the 'lazy boy quesadilla' with various fillings or the 'New York chicken' – a breast topped with bacon and cheese and served with corn on the cob and fries. Although it may ultimately appeal more to the younger generation, the Filling Station has a decent range of wines by the glass to keep the grown-ups happy, too.

  • High point: Ice-cream sundaes
  • Low point: Disappointing burgers
