Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

A handy location, late opening hours and moody atmosphere have allowed Ping On to build up a loyal legion of Stockbridge regulars. At first glance its reputation appears deserved, with its cosy low lighting and tastefully kitsch décor. But although the service is prompt, Ping On appears to have fallen victim to its own hype. The choice of starters is reasonably wide, with vegetarians well catered for, but the intriguing 'vegetable cocktail' is little more than cheap salad ingredients drowned in a suspiciously prawn-tasting sauce, and of the slightly more substantial meat-based options, not even the spring rolls can warrant any praise above ho-hum. The main courses are a little more adventurous, with the fluffy and gently flavoured Ping On special fried rice packed with an interesting range of meats. The satay vegetables, however, arrive at the table drowning in a curry sauce more reminiscent of a chip shop than a Chinese restaurant. Again, the desserts are your bog-standard affair: don't attempt the overly zesty orange sorbet unless zing really is your thing. Overall, Ping On is a disappointingly bland experience, but the convenience obviously satisfies locals with a late-night craving for a cheap and cheerful Chinese meal.

  • High point: Great location and presentation
  • Low point: Lazy cooking

We used to love this Chinese and following a move away from stockbridge we found ourselves still driving on occasion to get a decent takeaway from this place. However, we've not been there for about a year and decided to go on the 1st Jan as a new year treat, unfortunately this was the most awful chinese meal we have ever had - what happened ping on?? We actually took photos of our meals to post on trip adviser etc. The rice was obviously old, stored in boxes and turned into large mush balls....we cannot estimate how long it had been prepacked - maybe days. The food itself just smelled wrong, old and tired. Unfortunately, I have to back up the previous comment, its a real shame as I used to preach about this place but won't ever be back.

Crap. Just utter crap.

Ordered takeaway over the phone, despite them repeating my order back to me when I arrived a dish was missing. No apology given so I just stood waiting for 5-10mins while they went to make it. Got the food home to discover they had made the WRONG dish. Further my partner had 'crispy' chilli beef which was almost inedible. Firstly not crispy at all, secondly the strongest taste was flour and sweaty socks beef that was obviously poor quality. I had chow mien, which was too salty to eat.

I know from friends that this used to be a great Chinese, in my opinion it no longer is. I would rather eat a pot noodle. I will not be using them again and would advise anyone to take their money elsewhere.

What a load of nonsense. The Ping On is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh, I should know as I have been using it for 24 years and have appreciated the continuity when it changed hands twice. Never ever have I had a meal that has been less than perfect. My hobby is eating in restaurants, the Ping On is still my NO 1.
