Grape is located in a beautiful, high-ceilinged building and well situated at the east end of George Street for a break from shopping or a swift drink after work. The room is divided into two spacious bar areas (largely to accommodate the office crowd that drink here regularly), and a dining area which is a mixture of wooden furniture and cosy booths. Grape has one menu to cover lunch and dinner, which means the choices are fairly standard, but it seems to be appreciated by the odd tourist who may be ordering an all-day breakfast on a Saturday night. If it isn't your time of day for breakfast, choose from wraps, ciabattas, flat breads, sandwiches with fries, salads, pastas and burgers. The traditional choice of steak and ale pie is good, but soggy boiled vegetables let it down. The more adventurous tempura cod and chicken starter takes things beyond the menu's comfort zone and comes in a most un-Japanese heavy coating. Puddings such as a sliced baguette bread and butter pudding pass muster, but the vegetarian choice is severely limited.
