Whether it's Canadian Moosehead, a snappy Swedish Crocodile or a luxurious Arran Blonde, Republic is bound to satisfy anyone's thirst for beer, with up to 70 brews on offer from around the world. Little has changed at its original location on Gordon Street since its launch nine years ago. Minimalist wood-block benches and concrete walls dominate the often-busy basement space, and pizza dominates the food menu. But this Glasgow-owned bar chain has firmly entrenched its casual urban style in both the West End and Shawlands. In the Great Western Road branch, slate-grey walls create a chic venue for students, shoppers and local residents looking for a quiet pint or a livelier afternoon or evening out. Myriad special offers, such as free pizza with a drink during weekday lunchtimes, or two-for-one pizzas and pastas, keep staff busy all day. The more extensive menu here ranges from anytime snacks, such as chorizo, hand-cut chips or antipasti, to the full three courses, featuring dishes that mostly work well with beer. A home-made butternut squash soup is served with toasted granary bread and has a kick of lemon zest, while a caesar salad tastes fresh and tangy with parmesan and anchovy. A generous bowl of rich beef goulash is well complemented by spicy red cabbage and apple coleslaw, while the crispy-based 'gourmet' margarita pizza, smothered with buffalo mozzarella, is a filling proposition.
- High point: Wide range of global beer
- Low point: Rather limited choice if you don't like pizza
