Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Entering the basement grill of the ABode hotel for the first time you might imagine that you’ve stumbled accidentally into the nightclub. The cocktail lounge is a glitzy mirrored affair and the club atmosphere is enhanced at weekends when DJs might be mixing tunes while the keen staff work hard mixing drinks, taking orders and delivering food. Starters include local favourites of Stornoway black pudding, Perthshire oak-smoked salmon or a more exotic crispy crab balls with chilli, ginger and mango salad, all tasting good but the presentation can feel a little bare boned, especially given some of the asking prices. From the grill are burgers, Ayrshire lamb cutlets and a faultless 10oz Scottish rib eye. Alternatives of fish and chips, Thai tuna noodles or pasta and risotto are there for the less carnivorous. As side dishes are not included the bill soon adds up. With Michelin star Michael Caine's name on the door expectations are justifiably high yet not consistently met. With the newly installed manager dedicated to ringing in the changes and bringing some love to the place, perhaps soon it will fully live up to its estimable name.

  • High point: Impressive rump steak in mixed grill
  • Low point: Out of sirloin steak

Tucked away on the lower level of ABode Glasgow, BarMC and Grill is a mellow modern take on all-day dining with a menu full of fast and filling favourites. The bright café-style interior has smart wooden booths and tables for two, perfect for a lunchtime pit-stop or a relaxed evening meal. Typical dishes include burgers, steaks and market fish of the day, all fire-cooked on the chargrill. A late-night lounge bar offers chilled out tunes alongside cocktails, champagne, beer and wine.

Went on a Saturday night for the Divine Dining menu. The starter and main course were very average. We had chicken wings which had nice flavour, but soft unappealing skin.

For afters we ventured away from the set menu an opted for the £10 cheese board to share. At £10 we were expecting something special and my friend who I was dining with had it previously and said it was generous and pretty fabulous.

This was not the case. 2 small bits of blue, some very ordinary goats cheese (which was in both our main courses - risotto and a stuffed chicken breast) and 2 PIECES OF PECORINO, and 5 small crackers.

The hard Italian cheese was totally inappropriate for a cheese board, which was totally pathetic.

When we complained the server, who was lovely, got the manager. He was very rude and did not seem to take our complaint on board and made it seem as if we didn't like their cheese choice, not the cheese on the board was inappropriate.

We will not be returning.

Nice place and decor is great.
Food was good and presentation was spot on.
We all enjoyed our meal apart from the service which wasn't great.
The menus need sorting out, my partner's one was blank inside and my one had the paper inserts hanging out.
Service was average, the place wasn't full yet we had to ask one of the staff for drinks, after our main meal we waited 30mins then had to ask to see the desert menu, my partners desert menu again was blank and it was embarrassing having to ask again.
I checked out the grill menu on-line and fancied the surf and turf however it wasn't on the menu i was given, when i asked the waitress i was told" I've worked here for 2 years and their has never been surf & turf on our menu" i explained we'd looked it over online but all i got was a sigh and a face pulled at me.
They had a cheek to add a 12.5% tip even though the menu states this is only added for tables of 6 or more.
Very unimpressed.

Recently drank in Bar MC on Bath street. I thought it was a great bar to drink in. The interior was just right, the lighting great for just a relaxing drink, as well as the mood and layout was very open, comfortable and relaxing not to noisy with music (plus at some point a live singer performed which set a nice mood). It didnt have a particular vibe to it for example a student bar or old mans bar feeling, it came across as a bar for anyone whether you were just out of uni or just out of work. prices were not to bad either. the resturant downstairs looked great and now tempted to eat their next week to try the food.
