This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Situated in Bellahouston Park’s House for an Art Lover, which was built to a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design in the 1990s, the Art Lover’s Café matches the fine setting by serving high-quality food. It is a pleasant stroll through the house’s gardens to the minimal and elegant café - with crisp linen, pale colours and artworks dotted around, plus two large windows looking out over the grounds. It’s a rewarding place for a long lunch - with a suitably classy feel for a leisurely treat or a special occasion. There are options of imaginative sandwiches and salads, or a substantial menu including starters such as scallops, tartlets and a smoked chicken salad. Mains feature lamb, chicken, and a selection of fish - sea bass, haddock and a delicious rainbow trout fillet from the set specials. The succulent pork loin steak with creamed leeks, is complemented with a tangy apple and sage compote. Desserts are almost too indulgent, with a chocolate and Earl Grey mousse rich and heavy, lightened by cute pistachio cakes and a raspberry sorbet. Everything is beautifully presented, with careful attention to all the necessary details for a very enjoyable meal.
- High point: Suprisingly fine dining
- Low point: Limited opening hours
