Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Set just off the bustle of Sauchiehall Street, this former Post Office does everything an Irish-themed pub should do. The wooden floors and cosy booths allow shoppers to take the weight off their feet by day. At weekends the place becomes the perfect stomping ground to enjoy live Celtic bands at night. It claims to serve Glasgow’s best pint of Guinness and it’s not half bad – nor is the wine list. Book a table in advance if you plan on eating at the weekend, chances are you might not get one if there’s a football match on (there are TV screens showing sport everywhere.) The menu is a hearty one – bestsellers include breaded blue cheese mushrooms to start and Molly’s Famous Irish Stew, both tasty but far too much for one. For an Irish pub there’s plenty of Scottish influence – fish and chips, Aberdeen Angus lasagne and chieftain’s haggis sit alongside a burger and light bite menu. Get a free drink with your meal if you go for a burger on a Monday, a pie on a Wednesday and fish on a Friday. Proper pub grub.

  • High point: Lots of menu offers
  • Low point: Toilets could do with a makeover

Reviews of Molly Malones (224 Hope Street, Glasgow)

Quite a nice pub with some good food. We used to enjoy an Irish stew in there quite often. We also used to like going in there for a quiet drink on week nights after the cinema but not much recently.

Despite all its charms two things let it down. The service is sometimes poor during the day. I started to lose patience watching the staff chatting. Also it's unreliable on week-nights. Most of the time when we want a quiet drink on a week night we go round and it's often closed. Sometimes quite early.

Well worth a visit for some decent food, good guiness or to watch some sports but you'll need some patience.
