Visiting the University Café is like free-falling back to childhood seaside holidays, where the whole experience is simultaneously comforting and exotic. Dark wooden panelling and flock wallpaper surround the pink formica tables and red vinyl seats. A giant plastic 99 cone has replaced a weighing machine as a centrepiece, and mirror ball tiles glitter beside the rainbow selection of sweets in jars (think fizz bombs and soor plums). Even the most ardent of healthy eaters can't fail (on occasion, surely?) to appreciate the techni-coloured, deep-fried glory of it all. The full breakfast is a mere £4.50 and the chips (ubiquitous) are fat as fingers and fluffy inside. Thick minestrone soup and pizzas are home-made institutions. Award-winning ice-cream comes in classic forms – with a Flake, a snowball or drizzled with tinned fruit. A framed photo from 1918 shows the original Verrecchia family owners. Had they any idea they'd launched a piece of Glasgow history? Almost a century on, sharing tables here still fosters all that is good about community. One daily customer has a nook for her tartan shopping trolley, and helps clear tables when it gets busy.
- High point: A beloved Glasgow institution
- Low point: What? No veggie burgers?
