In a neighbourhood teeming with beloved 'home from home' coffee shops, the grandfather (or godfather) of them all has to be the traditionally Italian University Café. This is the kind of relaxed, mellow operation you get when your family has operated the business on a daily basis since 1918. The art deco interior is museum-like, with vintage cappuccino signs, red vinyl flip seats, Formica tables and jars of sweeties such as barley sugars and pear drops for sale in quarters. The crowd is equally motley; students nip in for a nourishing meal, oldies have come since they can remember and parents on nostalgia trips bring their kids and wax lyrical about their days at uni. The menu has an array of comfortable favourites. Everybody loves the home-made lasagne, which is immersed in a meaty tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. Peas drenched in vinegar come as a side dish and the all-day breakfasts and mince and tatties can't be made fast enough. The Verrecchia family are friendly and laid-back - they don't charge corkage if you bring your own vino. For dessert, a fruit ice made with the award-winning ice-cream will transport you right back to childhood.
