Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

Topolino's is Italian for Walt Disney's most-famous little rodent, but there is nothing Micky Mouse about this restaurant. It is entered by a narrow staircase, which leads diners down to a stylish basement taverna. This is no dark, dank underworld, tucked away as it is without daylight. It is surprisingly well lit, airy and modern, with blond wood floors and furniture, modern art, bright mirrors and colourful murals in the style of ancient Roman graffiti. Diners tend to be in jovial groups out for a night on the town. Surprisingly absent from the options are pizzas. Instead, the focus of this bistro-style menu is seafood and lots of meat dishes. Alongside are many familiar options – salads, crostini, pasta and a few globe-trotting dishes. The fungi Genovese is a generous portion of creamy mushrooms, sautéed in tomato and sweet rosemary and served on chunky toast. The main courses include sizzler platters – charred beef in a spicy tomato sauce, an Italian take on Tex-Mex fajitas. It's back to Italy proper for dessert with tiramisu – a slice of la dolce vita.

  • High point: Tiramisu to die for
  • Low point: A pizza-free zone
