Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

With its red and white checked tablecloths and large tricolore flag hanging from the rafters, Pulcinella is a traditional trattoria-style restaurant that has occupied this prime city centre spot for more than a decade. The cheerful colours and busy walls create a welcoming atmosphere. This, plus its location, translates into a pretty steady stream of regulars filtering in from nearby offices for good value set lunches and a bit of banter with manager Marco Franceschini. The menu options are Mediterranean rather than strictly Italian: a rich lobster bisque is flavoured with brandy and topped with garlic croutons, while grilled whole sardines come drizzled with chilli oil. There is a bit of an emphasis on meat, with half a dozen steak dishes, including the 16-ounce T-bone. As with the veal and chicken dishes, they are served alone, and accompaniments, such as sautéed potatoes with rock salt and rosemary, have to be ordered separately. All produce is advertised as bought locally, which is largely reflected in the fresh-tasting food.

  • High point: Cheery décor
  • Low point: Few inspiring veggie mains
