Offering classic Mediterranean dining with a stylish Merchant City twist, Esca is a cut above your average Glasgow Italian restaurant. Recently refurbished, it is subtly smart: red and pale blue chairs, grey ceiling-to-floor curtains, wood tables and high-backed, comfortable sofas. The waiting staff are friendly and knowledgeable enough to offer off-menu dishes to suit individual tastes – a delicately al dente vegetarian risotto made with mushrooms and asparagus, for instance, can be knocked up on request. Carnivores will be just as pleased. The chicken and red pepper kebab, as a starter, comes on a skewer, char-grilled until smoky and drizzled with a thin coat of fresh basil pesto. The main course selection is packed with meat options, whether chicken, duck, lamb, beef, veal or pork. An Esca rib-eye steak is served well done in a broad white bowl with a bed of crispy French fries and salad, topped with a creamy green peppercorn sauce. A more recent addition to the restaurant is the adjoining E2 area, which serves pastries, light bites and coffees in the morning, and also doubles as a function suite and bar/kitchen in the evening.
- High point: Comfy sofas
- Low point: Slightly tough steak
