Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

More than two decades old, the Di Maggio's chain is going strong and regularly wins awards for its 'family-friendliness'. This outlet, formerly known as Pronto, is the so-called Theatreland branch and now uses the same menu as the others. But it's rightly proud of a distinguishing feature: the wood-burning oven that makes pizzas as they were originally conceived. Light, fresh, with contrasting textures, carbonised at the edge and soft in the middle, the base is so perfect that the toppings – despite there being a wide choice – almost lose their importance. In an ideal world, this restaurant would survive on offering only pizzas, but the menu is busy and looks like it was designed to satisfy the diverse tastes of your average family. A stand-out is the salmon done with a pesto crust. To finish, the show-stopping 'toffee crunch eggstravaganza' is thankfully not limited to the kids' menu. Add a greedy scoop of Crolla's unique-tasting vanilla ice-cream and you'll leave as smiley as the serving staff

  • High point: Pizzas are a cut above
  • Low point: Unassuming décor
