Mulberry's occupies a peculiar position in a former canteen space tucked between garages on the Anniesland stretch of Great Western Road. But this relaxed yet elegant operation, offering traditional meat and fish dishes (utilising ingredients such as fresh salmon, Aberdeen Angus beef and the benchmark Stornoway black pudding) alongside more contemporary bistro fare, is worth finding. A smooth chicken liver parfait has a rounded meatiness and is served with a red onion marmalade, while a steaming bowl of plump west coast mussels in garlic cream is similarly well executed, both starters providing the restaurant's commitment to simple classics. Mains feature crispy-skinned fillets of sea bream leaning on a bed of creamed potato, drizzled with pesto and surrounded by chunks of roasted sweet peppers, while a flavoursome rib-eyed steak is accompanied by comforting stovies and hearty braised vegetables. The crust of a baked chocolate fondant crumbles to reveal a liquid velvet centre, the bitterness of the dark chocolate expertly balanced by the accompanying sweet and delicately perfumed Turkish Delight ice-cream. Friendly and attentive front-of-house staff ensure a warm welcome, making it easy to see why this neighbourhood restaurant has a loyal local following.
- High point: Dreamy chocolate fondant
- Low point: Difficult to find
