This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Many of Edinburgh’s traditional, independent pubs have disappeared in recent years, replaced by heavily branded chains. So, when a perennial favourite remains untouched, it must be doing something right. The Abbotsford continues to offer amicable, no-nonsense service and an outstanding array of beers, carefully selected from micro breweries. Wood-panelled walls and neutral décor combine with bright lighting to create a friendly ambience. There are options to sit at tables around the perimeter while the square, island bar provides space to linger as you sample beers or enjoy a hearty bar meal from the extensive lunch menu or trimmed-down evening version. There are ambitious dishes such as duck breast on watercress salad with a tarragon and green pepper dressing alongside more prosaic starters such as soup and pâté. Diners seeking comfort food might opt for a beef burger or a satisfying steak and guest ale pie.
- High point: Traditional bar with a great vibe
- Low point: Comfier dining in the restaurant upstairs
