Eating & Drinking Guide 2009

Discerning purveyors in food and drink, Peckham's delicatessens are a foodie’s paradise, selling everything from obscure continental beers to venison fillets and home-made desserts. How tempting it is then, when stocking up on goodies in the Bruntsfield branch, to venture downstairs to sample their culinary delights in comfort. Peckham's Underground is housed in an intimate basement space, lit by twinkling fairy lights and lined with crimson booths. The menu takes its inspiration from home and abroad, with most dishes having a British or Italian flavour. A starter of sweet cherry tomato and courgette bruschetta with a parmesan crust is large enough to count as a meal in itself, though others – such as a spicy Thai fish-cake drowning in sweet chilli sauce – seem disproportionately meagre. Sirloin steak is served in joyously unceremonious fashion: buried beneath a pile of sautéed chestnut mushrooms, crisp potato wedges and black pudding with peppercorn sauce. Cakes and sweets are the shop's star attractions, and the restaurant has indulged customers’ desires by laying on a selection of tempting desserts. Warm apple pie, the tangy fruit balanced by sweet buttery pastry, is particularly special.

  • High point: Delicious desserts
  • Low point: Thai spiced fish-cakes are short on fish
