Home of the Edinburgh International Festival, this lofty and imposing former church at the top of the Royal Mile is almost the last stop before Edinburgh Castle. It houses a box office, a rather splendid main hall (which hosts weddings, business events and performances) and also Cafe Hub. The café is decked out exuberantly with canary yellow walls and kaleidoscopic stained-glass windows and, like the rest of the building, it showcases a mix of contemporary design and classic Victorian architecture. Tourists and locals come to enjoy home-made soups and sandwiches, sharing platters and a small selection of mains. Quality can vary a little; chicken pie is rich and creamy but a sharing platter of fairly bland hummus and olives falls flat. The selection of scones and home-made cakes is good, and can be had as part of a popular £15 afternoon tea for two. Although only open during the day for most of the year, Cafe Hub opens its doors in the evening during the Festival, when it’s certainly in the heart of the action.
- High point: Family friendly, with an outdoor terrace in a great location
- Low point: Quality of food can vary

Cafe HubReport -
Shockingly hurried service. The waiter (possibly the manager?!) stood by our table shifting from foot to foot, sweating and looking at the other tables as we made our final choices and ordered. Staff succeeded in passing on their own anxiety during the busy lunch-time to us as customers. My companion made a query about the food he received and didn't receive a response until he had finished his meal.
One to avoid, sickly yellow colour decor and high anxiety atmosphere - food satisfactory.
