Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

With its prime location opposite Leith's bustling shore and its family-friendly atmosphere, Giuliano's attracts a steady stream of regulars throughout the week, including lots of family groups. Live music from Italian singer Roberto Enzo on Monday and Tuesday nights is a long-established feature, and a good value set price lunch (£6.95) is available during the week. The décor is less flamboyant than its uptown sister restaurant, but room is still found for a couple of statues of Roman goddesses, one decked out in a pirate hat in homage to the maritime location. The menu also makes the most of the locality, with a daily changing selection of fish and seafood specials on offer in addition to the main menu, which has many dishes in common with Giuliano's. These are mostly kept simple: crayfish baked with garlic and white wine arrive in the shell with little adornment, while king prawns are baked – perhaps just a tad too long – and wrapped in just a slice of Parma ham and served on some salad leaves drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Children can have fun designing their own pizza toppings and will surely find the dessert list irresistible, with its choice of traditional ice-cream-based favourites such as the knickerbocker glory.

  • High point: Lots of fun for the whole family
  • Low point: Décor looking a little tired
