Nestled on a New Town corner, Bellini can be spotted by its canopied entrance. Inside, courteous staff take coats and make you welcome. There is a little bar where an aperitif can be enjoyed while choosing between the bistro and the restaurant menu. The bistro, which offers a selection of Italian tapas-style dishes, is semi-separated from the restaurant by a pretty screen. As the manager Gina explains the restaurant’s daily specials while displaying a basket of freshly picked wild mushrooms, there is a wonderful ‘Fawlty Towers’ vibe to the place. The fungi specials are what Bellini is renowned for and good at. When not teaching the art of pasta to his classes, chef Angelo lets loose his talent creating fresh, rustic dishes. The sautéed wild mushroom, complemented by antipasti, is a delicious starter to share between two. The fungi pasta is a reliably good main, and although several other dishes are offered as alternatives, the mushroom risotto repeatedly impresses. A traditional tiramisu dessert is hard to resist and is enhanced when followed by a rich espresso. Angelo and Gina Cimini put heart and soul into Bellini, providing an eccentric yet authentic Italian culinary experience.
- High point: Bellini’s pasta is always fabulously fresh
- Low point: Atmosphere is best in the evenings

Comments for Bellini (8b Abercromby Place, Edinburgh)

Visited Bellini last Saturday evening. Very disappointed overall especially given its reputation. I didn’t find much of the food to be fresh (I suspect some was frozen) or imaginative. The staff were nice but the service routine is outdated and excessively formal. The house wine was very good though. The atmosphere was okay but the music a little elaborate. They are very accommodating for vegetarians. I don’t think I will be back, not value for money.
