Nile Valley has remained almost completely unchanged for years. The posters wallpapering the stairs down to the dingy basement dining area rotate, advertising new club nights and student drama productions. It’s a Sudanese restaurant, with popular Middle Eastern fillings: balls of lightly spiced falafel, thickly sliced char-grilled aubergine, hummus and feta are expertly rolled in khobz for some of the best wraps in town, which have lecturers and students from the nearby university queuing up and ordering their long-time favourites. The à la carte menu comes into its own after the lunchtime rush, and takes influence from across North Africa with ingredients such as molokhia in spicy tomato sauce, ful (fava beans) and bamia (okra). While the menu emphasises the vegetable side of a dish lamb or chicken feature as accompanying meats, though a small section gives fish the starring role. A somewhat dry baklava tops the small pudding list. Individual prices are higher than you might expect from the somewhat scruffy aspect of the place, but there are inexplicably cheap set menu deals which negate these.
- High point: A cheap, filling, reliably good lunch
- Low point: Service is quick, but not always cheerful

The food is good but the service is terrible. The menu advertises a two-course lunch special for a fixed price. I asked to order it and was told to choose a starter and a main, which I did. When the bill came I was charged a much higher a-la-carte price. When I complained the manager told me that I should have ordered from a different menu - which I was never shown - for the lunch special. He was extremely rude and refused to discuss the situation in any reasonable way. I believe that this was a deliberate strategy to rip me off, which succeeded because in the end I was unable to get out of the situation without paying up. Don't go there.

Food was excellent except the veg (okra) a bit stringy. but the service was the worst I've experienced in a long time. The waiter was just surly but the manager was aggressive and rude, treated me like a beggar or a thief. Never go there again.

I made this account purely to correct what I believe to be inaccurate reviews of this restaurant!
I have been twice and found the food to be incredible (some of the best lamb dishes I have ever tasted) and the service to be friendly and helpful. The dishes were tasty and certainly seemed fresh to me!
I would definitely recommend it and can't wait for an excuse to go back.

I had lunch at Nile Valley recently when I took my daughter on a university open day, and this was one of the most memorable meals I've had in a long time. The lunch menu had a good selection of Sudanese dishes, and service was very fast. We both thought the food was really delicious, with big portions, and all of the staff were delightful. If I didn't live so far away, I would be a very regular customer.

Having been a few times to the Nile Valley I have found it a relaxed atmosphere with delicious food. Would recomend trying to see if it takes your fancy- could be considered to be an expensive salad or basic salad well executed. (they serve other food than salad tho) Remember to byob as no alcohol is served...

Having read and researched a bit online for a change of the usual Italian, Indian restaurant I found this Sudanese African restaurant. It had been given some good reviews, from them I thought I'd try it out.
From walking into the place it looked liked they're squatting there and just hung some pictures up, the usual greasy spoon cafe you expect.
The tables and chairs look like they've been bought in a car boot sale, so far the background music is the only good thing I've picked out so far.
The waiter was recognised from previously being a security guard in Lidl where they probably buy they're menu from. The starters cost the average of £4 and the mains on average £10. Drinks are just soft and tea's but you can bring your own.
After ordering starters, main and some tea I was very disappointed. I hate paying for frozen food that I could of done myself. Two different meals were ordered yet looked and tasted the same but decorated with a few strips of Lidl's finest iceurg lettuce and a slice of orange. The only difference was one meal had sliced potato again skillfully defrosted and microwaved. The breads that came were a cut pitta bread, cut in four bits and african bread ( Tortilla wrap). The Sudanese lemon tea was a liptons teabag with some lemon, orange and possibly grapefruit placed in a small teapot.
All in all it filled a hole but for what I paid I could of went to Lidl and made for a fraction of the cost.

I used to go to the Nile Valley quite often and I LOVE the food. It`s very tasty and good value too.
However, I have to say that my last visit was extremely disappointing. We went for lunch and the waiter (boss) gave us the menu on wich it was written that the "Lunch deal" included starter, main course and rice. We ordered and when the food arrived, there was no rice. So my friend kindly sood and asked the waiter if the rice was coming. He told us very bluntly and agressively that "he`s the manager and he decides and there is no rice included in the lunch deal anymore because... he said so. And he said he doesn`t care if we`re we`re not satisfied because he`s the boss. " Even if we showed him on the menu that the deal includes rice, he was inflexible.
We had to pay for rice.
I`ll never go back there again because of that. Shame because the food is good.

I think this review is a little harsh, or maybe things have improved since it was written. The food is delicious, the service informal but informed, and the decor is Sudanese (surprisingly enough)! Downstairs has certainly been done up recently, and is now great, not like a student place at all.
