Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

The loving fusion of Scottish and Mediterranean flavours at Igg's is wholly appropriate for a Spanish-owned restaurant with a prime location at the heart of Auld Reekie, its brightly-coloured interior offset by a view of Calton Hill and the old Royal High School. The elevated prices suggest a venue that takes itself seriously, and, by and large, the menu delivers on its promise of solid, reliable (if unfussy) fusion cooking, the experience enhanced by a compelling, extensive wine list. Seafood is a speciality here, and a starter of plump, sweet scallops served with morcilla and a poached egg is particularly gratifying, while the more daring can get to work on succulent fresh oysters, the salty flesh counterbalanced by lemon, sherry vinegar and chilli. Of the main courses, the monkfish fillet arrives beautifully cooked, accompanied by a garlic mash and a light basquais sauce that doesn't overwhelm the fish, while the roast fillet of beef with seared fois gras and a pepper and thyme jus is a similarly simple, but well-cooked and hearty dish. The generous size of the portions extends to the limited dessert selection, which includes an enormous chocolate platter that's perfect for sharing.
