Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The sister restaurant of the quick and easy tapas bar Barioja next door, Iggs is a more formal dining experience which deserves the respect that goes with its long standing on Edinburgh’s Spanish dining scene. More than a decade old, it still presents an à la carte menu that’s fresh and interesting, with many dishes appearing on the good value lunch (two courses for £12.50) and early dinner (two courses for £18) menus. Like its twin, its inoffensively modern interior is intimate, but not so small as to feel overcrowded. The selection is focused on no more than half a dozen choices for each course, but every one has been designed with care and diligence, for instance starters such as a shortcrust pastry tart of delicate caramelised onion with a drizzled basil and oil dressing, and a dish of morcilla and scallop which manages to cook both disparate ingredients to perfection. Mains include a beautifully grilled sea bass alongside a rich mushroom risotto, and perfectly tender slices of bellota pork served with braised pig cheeks and a warm olive oil dressing infused with chorizo.

  • High point: An appealing and upmarket alternative to tapas
  • Low point: The quality comes at a price
