Daniel's Bistro
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

Daniel Vencker, owner of the eponymous bistro in the Leith docks, is a man who appreciates the importance of the brand. It's Daniel's bistro all right, and it serves Daniel's tarte flambée, followed by Daniel's sausages, rounded off with bread and butter pudding à la Daniel. It's the old trend of trademarking dishes, which, like the interior of Daniel's (all blues, whites and bright lights), is somewhat stuck in the 90s. This is kind of understandable: Mr Vencker adopted his modus operandi in 1996, and it's earned him plenty of fond regulars since. The secret appears to be serving fulsome dishes of rustic regional French food, ranging from specialities from his native Alsace – a sticky, slow-cooked pork knuckle, served (rather unsuccessfully) with red wine sauce and ratatouille – to more Provençal-style dishes – a dark, unctuous take on bouillabaisse, stuffed to the gills with seafood and served with a pungent rouille-topped toast. Portions will please those who subscribe to the view that big is beautiful, and an imaginative selection of desserts will please just about anyone.

  • High point: Daniel's generosity
  • Low point: Daniel's needs a revamp

Daniel's Bistro

The following information has been provided by the restaurant.

Daniel’s is a notable and well established Restaurant in Leith’s wonderful “Gastro jungle”. Owner run, multi awarded and especially very much loved, Daniel’s transcends extraordinarily well all social categories into a busy, happy cauldron, where its many customers/friends/fans/devotees keep on delighting themselves with a unique blend of eclectic foods that is found nowhere else in the city.

Well located near the old docks, inside a historic former whisky bonded warehouse, just opposite the majestic Scottish Government building, and near Ocean Terminal shopping Mall, Daniel’s glass and steel eatery lends a continental feel to an area that already has a fair amount of French connection (Bordeaux wines, Marie Queen of Scots, Marie of Guise, Franco Scottish trading alliances).

A modern, architecturally perfect and beautifully vibrant restaurant everyone does find something to their taste, as the menus offer contrasting styles of cuisines (classic & modern) reflecting flair, tradition and innovation.

Very disappointed especially after hearing such good reports prior to going. Had the sea bass which was the daily special and thought it was poor value for money. The fish was OK if oddly cut into little bits. The veg were quite mushy apart from the asparagus which was woody to the point of being inedible. On the plus side, the wine was good and the starters fine.

We're almost regulars at Daniels!
The food is authentic and consistently good. I cannot recommend highly enough, for starters, the tarte flambee, and for dessert the nougat glacee. For the main course any of Daniel's specials will not disappoint.
This is a hidden gem and very reasonably priced when compared with its neighbouring celebrity chef restaurants.

Best fish soup in town! We always enjoy our visits. The service is okay, as is the ambience.

I would reccomend this restaurant to anyone in this area looking for great tasting honest food. I used to go here all the time with my dad. We were never dissapointed with the food and always enjoyed huge meals. I had a look at the menue above and it was missing the wine list. We used to get a South African red wine with a short name that i can't remember. Would anybody be able to help me out with this?
Thanks.

Daniel's was an unexpected pleasure, - appearance from the outside belied the truly wonderful menu and food on the inside.. the dishes ranged from the traditional (an exceptionally cooked pork knuckle), to old favourites with a twist (salmon cooked with seaweed - also delightful). The deserts were also quite wonderful - the tarte tatin was just as good as it sounds.. and the chocolate terrine was frankly, one of the best chocolate deserts I have ever had, not too sweet, very very chocolatey, but served in shavings so I didn't feel too 'puddinged out' afterwards. The service was also great, friendly and efficient, but still relaxed. If there was one quibble, it would be the décor of the restaurant itself, which doesn't do credit to the quality and imagination of the food.
