Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Stockbridge’s main thoroughfare has a pleasantly village-like feel to it, and the large windows at Maxi’s provide an ideal place from which to watch daily life unfold in this appealing neighbourhood. Although it’s often busy, a low-key vibe and calming décor of blue, white and wood encourage you to take your time over a slice of cake or cup of Artisan Roast coffee. Plentiful breakfast options include croissants, French toast, pancakes and sausages from Bowers, and are served until a relaxed 3pm. Two soups are made on the premises each day while vegetarian quiche and a selection of panini and salads present ample choice for your plate. The slab of tortilla is tasty and wholesome, packed with braised courgettes, peppers, pesto and sliced potatoes, and it comes with an assortment of seasonal salads. Unusually for a café, Maxi’s has a license, and a glass of wine with your food can transform an ordinary lunch into an afternoon of me-time. The extensive children’s menu is well thought out and includes children’s breakfasts.

  • High point: A very civilised affair
  • Low point: Cakes tend to dry out in the chiller unit

2. Disappointed and Annoyed, Stockbridge – 30 October 2010, 1:25pmMaxi'sReport

This cafe is clearly out for the money, spending nothing on decor, which unfortunately hasn't become 'charm' in this case. Tables are crammed in just that tad too much for comfort and the food is of an inexcusably cheap quality. All made worse by it being served cold by hoity staff. Happy to slope away and never come back but I actually gasped out loud when I saw the bill!! I have had more satisfying, tastier better quality scottish breakfasts for a third of the price elsewhere. So annoyed am writing this review.

Ive been popping in here Id say about once a month for the last year. Service ranges from friendly to rude and back again. I have to say after today I will NOT be going back. The waitress was so rude, and the food was delivered incorrectly not once but twice, with no apology. I was then overcharged. The food is ok, but the service is not worth spending your money on!
