Centrally located in Edinburgh’s student heartland, Susie’s Diner offers simple counter service with a side helping of counter culture. Inside the door, a notice board groans with fliers for activist events, yoga classes and flat shares, while the rest of the walls host exhibitions ranging from photographic projects by human rights groups to local and ‘outsider’ art. The mismatched wooden furniture and communal tables add a well-worn bohemian charm. The meat-free menu satisfies both sides of the dairy divide, with a rotating selection of stews, pasta bakes, stir-fries and flans proving popular if somewhat predictable. Perennial favourites include comforting cheese and broccoli bake, and a crumbly cashew flan. The vegetable and bean enchilada has a touch of spice but the hot dishes rarely venture beyond the slightly bland. A mix-n-match approach appeals to all appetites, offering different plate sizes, full or half portions of mains, and a selection of bright, tasty salads. While this may benefit the indecisive, the efficient self-service operation allows little time for dithering and the prices soon add up. Though not unreasonable, Susie’s is far from budget dining. Not that the steady stream of students, locals and other loyal clientele seem to mind. Susie’s remains busy, buzzing but still relaxed throughout the day.

  • High point: Friendly atmosphere and bohemian charm.
  • Low point: Grubby loos could do with a makeover.

I am a student living just around the corner and Suzie's provide a tasty, nutritious option when I have to make amends for my regular diet of kebabs and beer. The food is good, at £8 a plate it is a little expensive compared to some takeaway options, but given the quality of the ingredients and the pleasant atmosphere it is worth it. If you are looking for somewhere to eat every day you'll soon tire of the menu, but it's a great once-a-week type place.
