Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Younger sibling to the restaurant downstairs, Henderson's Bistro is a more intimate setting with table service and added finesse to the food. A cosy interior of muted oranges with pretty chandeliers and lanterns providing the lighting makes for a comfortable place to enjoy wholesome and tasty food. The menu offers vegetarian staples such as nut burgers, curry, risotto, savoury crêpes and lasagne, but a specials menu details the key ingredients which change daily and according to season. In addition, a mezze plate features home-made spinach and lentil falafel, and a choice of dips including a very garlicky baba ganoush, hummus and tzatziki. For afters, the famous Henderson's cherry pie is made with organic flour and difficult to resist, while a frozen honey mascarpone cheesecake is generous in size and flavour. The cheese plate is attractively presented and served with Henderson's homemade oatcakes or bread, and will leave you feeling perfectly satiated and looking forward to your next visit.

  • High point: Friendly service and wholesome feel-good food
  • Low point: The toilets and back corridor could do with a face-lift

Not bad... probably best for an impromptu lunch. Understaffed on a Friday night when the place was full meant service was slow.

Portions could be bigger. Good food but lacking that wee bit something.
