Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

For an after-work drink and bite to eat the Ivory Lounge is a comfortable option. A flamboyant entrance with patterned mirrors and upholstered seating gives way to a large bar and dining area. Part of a chain of similar bars, the interior is a contemporary eclectic mix of furnishings designed to a formula. The menu is as post-modern as the décor and offers a pick-and-choose style of eating with a range of tapas, snacks and mains. As a venue this is not unlike many others of its kind, but the food feels far from mass-produced in terms of quality and flavour. For tapas or as a starter the mushroom wrapped in pancetta is a satisfying combination, served with rocket pesto, Stilton and pine nuts. Cod in ginger-beer batter tastes freshly caught and crisp. The typical brownie and ice-cream type of desserts are standard, but nevertheless you will find yourself wanting to return for the addictive chocolate fondue accompanied by fruit, Belgian waffles and marshmallows. On a warm evening the outdoor seating offers a good place to enjoy a cocktail in the heart of the city.

  • High point: Easy-going atmosphere and menu
  • Low point: Not all that original

Reviews of Ivory Lounge (126–128 George Street, Edinburgh)

Beware vouchers offered for signing up to the Ivory Lounge / 1440.co.uk mailing lists! Both alcohol and food vouchers are refused by the Edinburgh Ivory Lounge even though the website says they accept them. The refusal of alcohol vouchers is fair enough and is a failure of the English head office to recognise Scottish licensing laws. However, there is no legal reason they can't accept the food vouchers so it's a local management decision not to honour them!
