Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This Tollcross stalwart of 18 years has been refurbished with sultry red walls, ceiling spotlights, air conditioning, white tablecloths and fresh flowers imported from Holland, but the menu could also do with a revamp. King prawn puris and prawn cocktail are listed under vegetarian starters which is an unnerving start to the extensive menu which includes dishes from all over India. Two crisp samosas filled with spiced veggies are served with a huge jug of creamy mango yoghurt sauce which makes you crave more samosas. Vegetable side dishes are recommended to go with the main curries, which is a nice touch and directs you away from usual favourites, but the diced lamb with fenugreek seeds is completely overshadowed by the expertly cooked, spicy, al dente cauliflower. Other dishes don't quite deliver: spiced aubergine lacks spice and is bathed in oil; tinned pineapple spoils an interesting tamarind and lentil dish; and you would be hard pressed to identify the spices in the chef's recommended chicken Kathmandu dish of onion, fresh coriander, garlic and ginger. Bombay Bicycle Club needs to shift up a gear to compete with the other good Indian restaurants in the area.

  • High point: Stylish decor and some hits on the menu
  • Low point: A few misses on the menu

Reviews of Bombay Bicycle Club (6–6a Brougham Place, Edinburgh)

1. Lucy and Stacia, Edinburgh – 28 March 2009, 5:50pm3 starsBombay Bicycle ClubReport

The quality of the food here is very variable - the first few times we ate here, we liked it, but more recently, we have been unimpressed. However, what never changes is the rude, inattentive, obsequious staff, who have served us the wrong dishes multiple times, and refused to apologise.
