Beneath one of Edinburgh's most landmark buildings, Michelin-starred Number One cocoons diners from the outside world within its low-ceilinged, luxurious, deep crimson interior. From start to finish, it’s clear that great care has been taken to ensure a memorable dinner, and considerable effort has gone into producing the beautifully presented food. From the introductory amuse-bouches that accompany the menu to the petits fours that arrive with the coffee, chef Craig Sandle's menu is traditional yet imaginative. Crisp crab cannelloni with fennel purée and mussel and saffron dressing gets the meal off to a racing start, while artichoke barigoule with truffle, smoked Clava brie and walnut gnocchi takes the experience up a level. For dessert, chocolate chiboust, pineapple and cardamom purée and lime sorbet hits the heights, prompting sideways glances to see if you can get away with licking the plate. The friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere here counter any preconceptions of five-star stuffiness. It's a world away from the noisy trains and buses that grind past just feet away.
- High point: Accomplished and imaginative eating in luxurious surroundings
- Low point: Stepping back outside onto noisy, busy Princes Street

pure food porn from start to finish - its the little touches that make fine dining at this level such a joy - I ate here twice two weeks apart and even then the amouse bouche and pre desserts were different - care has been taken on every level to ensure a complete dining experience the waiters are attentive but not sychophantic, tables are spaced to give privacy and the peaceful atmosphere defies the hubub of Princes Street being only metres away. Very expensive but very special - the best place I have eaten in Edinburgh

This place is fantastic. 8 of us had a wonderful dining experience here a couple of weeks ago. The food is a culinary experience and the wine that accompanied the taster menu gave us a stunning choice. The conversation was never limited by the courses? The staff were as if invisable other than the brief introduction to the different wine and food at the beginning of each course and this was fascinating to say the very least! Everything from the food/wine homemade bread/toilets/bar/dining-room was to an exceptional standard. For a special occasion or treat I would high recommend this place to anyone who is looking to have their palette pampered. Superb
