This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
A well-loved local landmark, Dino’s offers tired shoppers a taste of Italy as imagined at the dawn of the 70s. The Sauchiehall Street branch has a layout as broad-ranging as the menu, they strive to suit everyone. Out front are sheltered al fresco tables, then an anteroom serving takeaways is furnished with high stools along the counter, perfect for a quick coffee while you wait. Through the glass doors, it becomes a casual diner with retro red booths, but venture on and you’ll find a deceptively large formal dining room, with textured walls, red-checked tablecloths and decorative partitions giving it an intimate, nostalgic feel. The waiters are happy to chat and many have worked here for 20 odd years, about as long as some customers have been regulars. Dino’s knows its market well and the food is traditional in style, with a wide choice of pizzas and pastas alongside fried fish and good cuts of meat in sauce. However, nothing stands out and ‘al dente’ is by special request, while the quality of the side salad suggests that its function is purely decorative.
- High point: A warm, laid-back welcome, just like home
- Low point: Gluey gnocchi
