This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
The well known Di Maggios chain has been expanding since the early 1980s – a sign their formula works. Whether dining in the bohemian West End with its thick red carpets and dark décor or the stylish Royal Exchange Square – 1930’s art deco interior suits its location while the small frontage disguises a massive dining space inside, managing up to 380 covers. Whatever branch you go to, the menu stays the same with the odd exception, though not what could be described as authentic there are some safe options to be had. Starters are mostly deep-fried, whether it is stuffed mushrooms, mozzarella cubes or potato skins though the bruschetta is tasty with a combination of fresh tomatoes and basil. Mains are mind boggling with over two dozen pizza and pasta combinations alone, along with fish, chicken, meats, burgers, sandwiches and salads. Portions are generous and service can be erratic at times, though children are always welcome and their pre-theatre options are cheap and cheerful.
- High point: Family dining all night long
- Low point: Lack of fresh ingredients
