After more than 25 years in business, Di Maggio's is a firm favourite with loyal locals and tourists alike visiting its various outlets. Even outside peak times, the Royal Exchange Square branch welcomes a stream of customers, attracted by the efficient service and ever-popular booth seating – not to mention one of the few places in the city centre with good outdoor seating (right next to the Gallery of Modern Art). With only bruschetta and minestrone soup flying the Italian flag, the starters generally owe more to Uncle Sam. A combo starter has mozzarella cubes, spicy wedges, onion rings and chicken wings served with the obligatory dips. Fettuccine cartoccio – which, at a modest £8.75, is one of the more expensive pastas – is baked in foil with Italian sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella and a tasty bolognese sauce. It seems to be nearly double the average pasta portion size and is one of those dishes that leaves little room afterwards for one of the decadent desserts.
- High point: Outside tables on a traffic-free square
- Low point: More than 100 starters and main courses on the à la carte
