Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Strata offers two different experiences. An intimate cocktail bar occupies the ground floor, while the mezzanine space serves as an informal dining room with a handful of tables and plenty of twinkling candles. A relatively small but still ambitious menu focuses of fresh Scottish produce with Mediterranean and Asian flavours. Among starters, fleshy king prawns are served in a martini glass with crunchy iceberg lettuce, accompanied by an unusual watermelon and cucumber sorbet that is sweet and tangy. Expect main courses such as red snapper in Thai green sauce or a roast lamb shoulder with honey-glazed carrots and parsnips. Chicken breast with a spicy black pudding mash comes surrounded by a ruby red wine sauce that is full of colour (if lacking real depth). A flavoursome Scottish cheese platter – typically brie, blue and cheddar – arrives at correct room temperature, accompanied by mini Arran oatcakes and apple chutney with a hint of spice. Strata offers a well-priced fixed menu at all times along with the à la carte options, meaning you don't have to break the bank to try some interesting food.

  • High point: Interesting flavour combinations
  • Low point: Noise from bar

I have been going to Strata for years now and it is still one of my favourite bars in town. I recently started working near by so me and the girls are in there for lunch every other week and the food is amazing and reasonably priced.
Don't know what the other comments where about regarding the cocktails, every time I've been in they have no problem making me anything I want even if it's not on the list, and I do know my cocktails.

good work strata, keep it up. x

I used to work for Bar Square but was aware of Strata's good reputation before it was sold/leased to my former boss. The problem is that he has homogenised both places so they are now essentially the same in terms of menus for food and drink, which has led to a dip in standards for Strata. Couple that with an ever changing group of staff and there never really is a sense of harmony in the place which leads to a poor experience for everyone.

i need to agree with the folk with the comments because two weeks ago i and my daughter and four friends went to strata for lunch before we were seated my daughter had asked if she can use the toilet because she had started her periods and needed to change she was told that she had to wait till we were all seated!!!!! before just to make sure that we were going to eat !!!!! my closet friend had returned the comment after we all heard this " that they had to be joking" and we leave and went to princess square instead, the staff has an bad attuide and i will NEVER EAT there again

I booked a table for myself and 6 friends for lunch on a special weekend we were having to celebrate 40th birthday. Booking weeks in advance asking for a table that would be nice and bright to see out to the street. On arrival we found they had no record of the booking then placed us in a dark dingy back room. The food was not too bad but the service was rubbish when we saw a free table we were refused a move. General attitude was they did not care less. They got a 30p tip in the end only so much as we could not be bothered to wait for the change! Being from Glasgow I was trying to show off to my Edinburgh friends the great delights of my native city Stata quite frankly is not one of them.

I have to agree with the previous comment, me and my friends would occasionaly go to Strata for the cocktails, but a few weeks ago we went back to find it had been taken over by a chain. Needless to say, the standards had plummeted; the cocktails we ordered were made quite badly by a sullen, clearly inexperienced bartender. And the prices are much higher! I politely asked for a cocktail to be made again due to the fact it was frankly disgusting, but was met with a blank refusal by a seemingly stubborn manager. Will not be returning, unfortunately.

Sad days, sad days. Strata has been bought over by Bar Square. Like Bar Square its a bit rubbish. The cocktail menu is significantly less than the way it was and despite being assured the staff where qualified, the drinks where rubbish. The Mojitos tasted of leaves, the Zombies where mild and the other cocktails where bland. I've noticed a major drop in quality and care most of the cocktails didn't have fruit in them or garnish.
Really disappointing, the drinks where considerably more expensive and with 20mins before the last orders they knocked us back for an £80 round of cocktails because they didn't want to make them. We usually get a group of friends together for cocktails at Strata. We had three rounds in there and we unfortunately won't be going back.

Great menu choices, tasty food, good service and value for money. Lively and comfortable atmosphere. Cocktail list is also good. Will definately return.
