Bang in the middle of bustling Broughton Street, this perky, seemingly small café actually seats up to 40 diners. The neat front room and bigger room at the back are simply decorated with wooden tables and cheerful sky-blue walls. The pleasant décor and happy staff together make for an easy-going eating experience. A continuously busy takeaway trade sees customers placing orders at the deli counter just inside the door throughout the day. The long list of freshly-made sandwiches includes staples such as tuna mayo and salad, or alternative fillings of smoked turkey, jarlsberg and roasted vegetables. The selection of different breads on offer includes a herby focaccia shot though with olives. But the true surprise is the lunch menu that extends well beyond the norm for what could easily be mistaken for a sandwich-heavy café. Larger, bistro-style dishes deliver majestic Toulouse sausages with red onion marmalade sitting atop a heap of mustard mash. Daily changing specials include items such as lamb and salmon with roast potatoes. Prices for larger meals can be hefty, however, especially for an unexceptional Greek salad drowned in dressing. But finish off with a dark, moist carrot cake and you'll feel satisfied all afternoon.
