Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

From ladies who lunch to young families who brunch, from couples to bridge partners, students to suits, Toast welcomes all and delivers everything a neighbourhood bistro should. The regulars are lucky that this is their local. It looks like a coffee shop, with tray bakes on the counter, art-clad walls and a colour combo of cream painted wood and pink-red leather chairs. Atmosphere is unpretentious, service obliging. Tempura prawns to start must have been deep-dipped that second, while the accompanying sweet/sharp, crunchy/soft blue cheese, grape and walnut salad is more than mere decoration. As for mains, again the key is texture: the unctuous, chunky sweet potato risotto is so good it eclipses its sea bass fillet draped with crispy salami, but perhaps the pheasant isn’t at peak season. For dessert, crumbly chocolate torte is more than fine, but pear and almond tarte tatin with pleasantly alcoholic Calvados ice cream is best dish of the lot… or maybe it was that risotto?

  • High point: Must-try-at-home sweet potato risotto
  • Low point: Popularity means busy brunchtimes at weekends

Lovely and quiet environment, and staff was friendly all the time we've been there.

The soup of the day is the first reason to go there: they are never boring nor expected! Worth a try!

Cakes and sandwitches also good.

Well prepared food in a friendly and relaxing environment. The full breakfast is my particular favourite, the only downside being unable to order fried eggs. That said, everything else more than makes up for it. The food is piping hot, the beans prepared in the kitchen (and not in from a can) and the mushrooms not the usual boiled rubbish normally offered.

Get there early as it's popular.

I've loved Toast ever since, as a student, I found it the nicest place to get a bit of peace and quiet and an enormous slice of cake. These days, rather like myself, it has grown in sophistication! If you're lucky enough to get a table on a Sunday morning, you'll find the french toast generous and the homemade baked beans comforting. This is one of the nicest places to eat brunch in the city. The dinner menu is perfect for a weekday supper, with the intimate atmosphere ideal for a date or a girly gossip. And all from a kitchen which is quite possibly the smallest in Marchmont!
