In this Sheraton Grand Hotel restaurant, tables are arranged along the large windows so guests can enjoy the views of Edinburgh Castle and Festival Square. Diners are shown around the long buffet and open-plan grill that offers international cuisine. For starters, there's a multitude of delicacies including spicy shrimp ceviche, Italian-style aubergines and mussels cooked with chillis and mint. For the main course, diners can choose between prepared meats and vegetables, or Indian dishes such as murgh palak – soft, marinated chicken slow-cooked in spinach – and matar paneer – creamy cottage cheese and green peas swimming in a mild red gravy. At the grill, the chef swiftly prepares steaks, lamb and chicken skewers and stir-fries as requested. A Thai-style stir-fry is spicy and filling, with firm rice noodles, heaps of flaked salmon and crunchy prawn crackers on the side. The dessert table is filled with cute creations such as mini apple pies, banana cakes with marzipan bananas, wobbly crème caramels and smooth pink cranachans. On Sundays, a jazz band and magician for the kids enliven the atmosphere.
- High point: Wide variety of dishes
- Low point: Can be empty during the week
