Although on the corner of Wellington Street and West Regent Street, Bouzy Rouge's interior feels as if it would not be out of place in central Barcelona. It might be described as a contemporary spin on Catalan modernism: there is not a straight line to be seen. Wood and wrought iron tables and chairs finish off the pseudo Gaudiesque effect. The menu does not reflect the Mediterranean surroundings, but has a Scottish slant with some international influences. Soft yellow potato cakes, with a light Thai curry flavour, come with a spicy coriander and chilli jam. Grilled goat's cheese with a large slice of tomato covered with a tart balsamic dressing makes a good start to the meal. Seared saddle of Rannoch venison, with a well-fired surface and a nicely pink interior, is served with crunchy Savoy cabbage, creamy fondant potatoes and a sweet redcurrant jus. Desserts include a rather solid slice of warm sticky toffee and date pudding with a caramel sauce. A popular restaurant with a daytime business crowds and then pre-theatre diners, Bouzy Rouge delivers 'causal gourmet' in good portions.
