Long an Edinburgh institution, Maxies knows its loyal audience of tourists and locals and caters to them well, especially in the summer months when the long outdoor terrace offers the chance to while away the hours in the sun, away from the hordes on the Royal Mile above or Victoria Street below. Inside, the warren-like restaurant tricks the eye at every turn, with mirrors and cubby holes all over the place. Cushions, sofas and candles give a feeling of opulence, while the well-stocked bar provides the backdrop to your meal. Charming staff are eager to greet you, and with such an atmosphere of welcome and comfort, one thing's for sure: you will stay longer than you intended to. The menu is packed with classic favourites in an attempt to appeal to all tastes, with starters ranging from deep-fried brie to breaded prawn and avocado salads. Always on offer are daily specials – usually meaty options such as rib-eye steak served with black pudding and a rich port sauce. A spicy vegetable enchilada will appeal to vegetarians and those with smaller appetites. A daily changing range of puddings such as profiteroles and strawberry cheesecake may encourage you to linger even longer . . .
- High point: Cosy, boudoir-like surroundings
- Low point: Rather outdated menu
