This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Bruntsfield institution Montpeliers describes itself as ‘the ideal local’, but this slick, style-conscious bar-brasserie would not be out of place in George Street. A refit has divided the place into distinct bar and brasserie spaces. There is a nod to retro 70's and a touch of plush Victoriana about the décor, with wood and mirrors, fake flock wallpaper and low-level lighting. By day the relaxed mood is right for slouching on a sofa with the paper over breakfast, or bag one later for sipping cocktails as the bar gets more boisterous. The wide-ranging menu of crowd-pleasing global café classics evolves slightly from day to dinner with the addition of specials from the char-grill. Chick pea fritters whet the appetite well, although the moules are more à la crème than marinières, and there is more to cassoulet than chopped-up venison sausages, potatoes, green beans and mange tout, plus overly-mustard mash. The crème brûleé is just crème, not brûleé. Its accompanying shot glass of passion fruit sums it up: style, not substance.
- High point: Chick pea fritters to start
- Low point: Dishes not as described

I have been going to Montpelliers for a while and the food has improved but the service is very hit and miss. The staff seem to swan around as if they don't care and often it is difficult to get served. I went for dinner a few weeks ago and they were quite busy. The Manager - (an older man with glasses and he greeted me at the door) walked past me on three occasions when it was obvious that I was looking to order. When he eventually did show he got my order wrong and looked put out when I informed him of this!!
The only saving grace was a fantastic waitress (an Irish girl) who went out of her way for me and not only served me promptly but recommended some food and wine and was funny and charming. I would go back again for service like that.

We dined at Montys a couple of months ago. We'd been many times before but thought we'd get the benefit of the List card as it was a week night. Neither the waiting staff or the Manager knew they were part of the list card scheme. After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing they did give us 2 for 1 but it was a bit annoying when I'd checked this website that afternoon and they were adamant they were not part of the scheme.
The food was average. I had the chicken with noodles and they were drowning in soy sauce which ruined it a bit. The standard of food has slipped a bit we feel, as you can see we haven't rushed back yet.
