Conveniently located just a hop and a skip from Waverley Station's south entrance, the Doric Tavern has been providing relief for the travel-weary since trains began chugging in and out in the mid-1800s. It's steeped in history, and rumour has it the building even has its own resident ghost. This is easily believed when you consider its proximity to the capital's supernatural hub, Mary King's Close. Thankfully, the yesteryear charm has been retained, and the casual demeanour set by the bistro's bare wooden floors and tables and perky Celtic soundtrack ensures a cheery ambience. There's no denying that the views over the Balmoral Hotel's glowing clock tower are rather fetching too. Progressionists might allege that some of the dishes also err on the historic side, but the mature clientele seem content with the Scottish-themed platefuls on offer. At the time of going to press, new owners had just picked up the keys, but it is enhancements rather than a full overhaul on their agenda, including the introduction of Sunday roasts and a single menu to run all day, every day. Dining at the Doric should remain a pleasant experience for those with or without onward travel plans to keep.
