Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2010 edition.

Ti Amo's position opposite the Festival Theatre ensures its enduring success. Amusingly dated décor distracts from perusing menus bearing the brunt of many a thumb and spilled vino: menu-matching, smoke-aged, stencilled walls; pillars, statues, and an astounding, must-see, heart-shaped fountain as you glide down sweeping steps to the loos. Ti Amo happily lives up to the clichés, giving punters what they want. An extensive menu ensures options for all, even the carbonara-conscious who can plump for the 'healthy choice' menu. Beautifully titled retro classics such as the Sofia Loren pizza (asparagus and Parma ham), spaghetti Gorbachev (smoked salmon, vodka and caviar) and scampi Casanova (in a sauce of shallots, brandy, cream and mustard) appear alongside accessible favourites from melon and prosciutto to lasagne al forno and specials such as tagliatelle Ti Amo, done in a creamy bolognese sauce with olives and pepperoni. So pick your dessert by its picture, pour another glass and enjoy what will surely be a most memorable experience.

  • High point: That fountain
  • Low point: Disappointing fruit salad

6. Murphy, Fife – 30 December 2011, 1:53pmTi AmoReport

Tiamo was a last minute and regrettable decision. Alarm bells should have rung when immediately after a holiday season matinee we did not need reservations and the place was mostly empty. The second alarm bells rang after we were shown to a table and the upholstery on my chair wasn't fit or clean enough for a dog to sit on. The third and final ignored alarm bells was the dated and grubby state of the ladies loos.
The place is dirty, stale and tatty. Plaster coming away from the ceiling and the "plaster" on the stairs desperately needs painting.
Service was VERY slow and when the starters came out they had forgotten mine !!! (There was only two of us). My husband ate his on my insistance and I ate mine alone when it eventually arrived. The mains took forever and when they did come my chicken bacon and white wine sauce which was supposed to be served with potatoes and seasonal veg arrived with.....chips and what could very loosely be described as salad. A slice of tomato and a piece of lettuce. The waiter was surprised I wasn't pleased and offered to get chef to "cook me some" as if were a special request. My husbands lasagne was swimming in oil and looked awful. No side garnish just sitting like a dogs dinner in the gondola shaped dish which looked as if the whole thing had been in an oven too long. Awful surroundings, awful food, never again. We paid for what we ate (very little) and left.

I had lunch with a friend last week and we both really enjoyed the food. I returned today (Sunday) with the family but had logged on to check opening times and was surprised to read the reviews. Despite the poor comments we decided to go anyway and once again really enjoyed the food. We shared a pizza, risotto and pasta and everything was freshly cooked and delicious and the portions generous. The restaurant was not particularly busy so no complaints about the service. We didn't have starters or deserts on either occasion so can't comment on these but certainly happy with what we had.

We chose to eat lunch here because of the location & because of an advertised offer of 2 courses for £6.95. However, the service was appalling, the food bland & in spite of having had a board at the door promoting the 2 course offer we were told it was not available which meant the whole experience was expensive as well. We were a party of just 5 & the restaurant was far from full yet it took ages before anyone took our order, we had to repeat the drinks order 15 mins after the original order & it took an hour before our food was brought to the table - thankfully we had all only ordered mains or we might be there yet. When the bill was brought we had to ask for our change - the staff had assumed the extra was a tip & were all set to pocket it! We were made to feel very unwelcome & treated as if we were a nuisance instead of paying customers. I will not go again & would STRONGLY advise anyone thinking of eating here to go somewhere else.

We went tonight before The Secret Garden and I really cant emphasise how awful we found it.

The food was plain and bland, the service abrupt, no-one smiled at all and the whole thing was rushed - I've eaten in a lot of places and few have made me want to comment this much as it wasn't so much that we had a bad experience - everything was done it was just done badly.

We were sitting next to a group of 10 and as we left the all looked equally unimpressed - the restaurant will survive because of it's fantastic location but really needs to look at what it is it's offering compared to Ciao Roma (next door pretty much) or Vittoria on George IV Bridge for how it should be done.

0 stars. Blandest of bland italian food, bad and arrogant service, and a rip-off. All 3 dishes AND starters had the same sauce (tomato paste from the can - no spices or herbs at all). Thus no value for money. We had asked in advance whether we could have only 2 courses from the menu. But when asking for the bill we where told that we'd pay the full price whatever, even if only having one course (they didn't give us our 2 espressos for free in exchange, as any good restaurant would do). The bill had a service charge added to it in handwriting (we didn't have the time to check the menu because we had to leave, but this seemed rather fishy).

This place seems to have a steady and committed clientele. True, the place is huge, and the waiters are very outgoing and polite, but surely one goes to a restaurant for the food? Here, the food seems like a old-fashioned British version of Italian food, and nothing tastes particularly fresh or hand-made, as one would expect from Italian cuisine. It's easy enough to whip up such food at home, so unless you're going for the atmosphere or because you don't want to cook yourself, I personally can't see the point of dining here.
