Refurbished and revived in May 2005 after a fire in the nightclub above that caused substantial water damage, Bacchus is again a laid-back style bar that has retained its pre-club atmosphere and a reliable clientele of diners. Its extensive menu reads like a checklist of traditional favourites. Starters include a crunchy bruschetta, deep-fried brie, chicken liver pâté and Thai crab-cakes with chilli dip. Moist and juicy in white wine, garlic and cream or tomato and green chilli, the mussels are also served as a main course, as are the potato boats, which are bulging with bacon and cheddar or tomato and red pepper salsa. Among a selection of more than 30 mains, including various varieties of Thai red curry, pasta, burgers and enchiladas, chicken stuffed with grainy clusters of haggis is exceptionally moreish, served in a light, creamy Drambuie sauce with mash and broccoli. The char-grilled Cajun chicken is spread with a piquant tomato and sweet pepper salsa, and is served across a choice of ciabatta, baguette or tortilla wrap. For afters, opt for the hot chocolate fudge cake, black cherry and rhubarb crumble and caramel shortcake.
