This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Set among a clutch of West End style bars, Bar Roma has packed its bright, roomy interior for three decades – seemingly without too much effort. The large, kitsch, plastic tree helps set a vibe that's low in pretension and high in conviviality; often the chatter is cranked up high over the muted tunes on the music system. Food is erratic in quality. An elegant carpaccio of beef with blue cheese sauce and pear starts things off well, displaying a deft touch from the kitchen. The mixed fish kebab for mains is good in parts, while the pizza could do with a minute or two more in the oven. To finish, a tiramisù is gloriously moist with a zap of fresh coffee. It may not serve the most refined dishes in town, but Bar Roma manages to promptly seat and serve the large groups and blethering couples who descend here, and charm them as well.
- High point: Efficient, proficient and charming waiting staff
- Low point: Inconsistent quality of the food
