Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

La Bagatelle is a fine example of the popular local bistro. The décor is muted and homely, the walls adorned with paintings and sketches by regular customers, and co-owner Karen Perschke wanders from table to table chatting to her loyal clientèle. This personal touch extends to the food: chef Christophe Pelletier makes every effort within reason to tailor his dishes to diners' individual needs and wants. The menu also includes a postscript advising customers that, as a slow food operation, everything is freshly prepared. With this in mind it's worth ordering an aperitif of kir pêche as you peruse the menu, and settling in for the duration. Starters include a light, smooth fish mousse, which is given an invigorating kick by peppery creamed horseradish, and smoked chicken, whose flavour is offset by sweet tomato chutney. Of the mains, moist supreme of guinea fowl arrives with apple calvados, but the undoubted highlight is a juicy pork fillet wrapped in a duxelles of mushrooms and puff pastry. The profiteroles are also worth trying, vanilla ice-cream being served in crispy choux pastry parcels. Dining here is an enjoyable, relaxed affair that will doubtless have you returning to the fold again and again.

  • High point: Relaxed, convivial atmosphere
  • Low point: No background music of any kind
