This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
Cheerful checked tablecloths set the scene in the Grassmarket’s Petit Paris, along with retro French posters and a quirky clock made of kitchen utensils. A recent refurb has introduced some solid, nicely made benches, wine boxes and pewter worktops, reinforcing the sense of timeless quality. Efficient staff navigate cheek-by-jowl tables to serve a menu of snails, bouillabaisse, coq au vin and Toulouse sausages. Crisp, flaky pastry topped with tomato-y ratatouille contrasts with soft, grilled sardines. Rich madeira and onion marmalade accompanies a coarse terrine wrapped round smooth liver pâté. The stew of the day comes to table in its copper casserole – chunks of venison fall apart at a touch but retain their distinctive flavour. Daily specials include a brace of tender, roasted quail, the saltiness of the bacon highlighting the sweetness of the grape sauce. Sautéed potatoes come with a grinding of black pepper. Classic crème brûlée finds a nice match in a glass of Montbazillac dessert wine. Served in a glass, the Agen prunes are sweet and plump after soaking months in Armagnac, while the remaining liqueur makes a delicious digestif.
- High point: Authentic French flavours
- Low point: Tables are very close together

Had a great meal at Petit Paris last night. It is just like stepping into a little piece of France in Edinburgh.
A starter of wonderful rich fish soup was followed by some giant Toulouse Sausages which were very tasty and exceeded my expectations. We had a Sancerre with the starter and some Pinot Noir with the mains. Both were excellent quality and fairly priced.
The staff were very friendly and the whole place had a real buzz about it.

It was the best food experience I've had in Edinburgh in 10 years! It truly feels French, fresh, home-made, simple but not boring. The staff is vibrant, spontaneous and friendly. The place makes you feel cosy, makes you want to stay forever. I'd recommend the fruit tart, simply delicious!

Experienced the most exquisite french cuisine that I had for a long time last thursday. This is a little gem nested in the oldest and touristic place of Edinburgh. we were a party of 5 and all of us agreed on the excellent quality and value of our meals. I definitely recommend the king scallops wrapped with bacon served with a rich seafood sauce and not to mention the ribeye steak from the Buccleuch estate!!!! Lively but still intimate atmosphere makes you feel cosy with a very friendly and attentive staff. Will definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for authentic french cuisine with a reasonable price!!!

From the moment you walk in you are under the spell of the french bistro atmosphere!!!! Well greeted by the friendly staff, you are quickly acquainted with their love affair with food. The value is excellent and I will definitely recommend the traditional french black pudding with apple compote and the delicious crusty creme brulee. Not to mention a well chosen list of wines. Already planning my next visit.

This place is lovely. I hve eaten here often and the quality of food was always great. The whole staff is French and make you feel welcome.
The last time I ate here though the portion we had (of a lamb casserole) was a complete joke. 3 small pieces of lamb and 3 small pieces of potato, per person, really not even enough for a child.
