Ronnie Clydesdale's fashionable West End restaurant has been championing Scottish produce and cooking for three decades, receiving many rave reviews during that time. It has a glass-roofed, airy, cobbled courtyard, a liberal supply of leafy plants and the soft trickle of a pool murmuring in the background - all of which give the impression of al fresco dining. The ever-changing menu is exciting to read - let alone sample - and a complimentary cup of creamy Cullen skink soup is an intriguing introduction. Pearl white and soft Argyll-aught scallops are pan-fried and darkly seared to create contrasting flavours, and are served with a crunchy potato rosti. Elsewhere, smoky slices of Gressingham duck are garnished with a tart half fig and Rothesey black pudding. Main courses include a trilogy of Ardnamurchan venison with different sauces - cuts of tender smooth saddle, pink-centered, paper-thin fillet and rough sausage meat revealing different textures and surprisingly mild, almost beefy, flavours. There is clearly great pride in sourcing the finest ingredients, which is demonstrated by an impressive cheese platter that features a velvet smooth but strong Tobermory Truckle cheddar. For a finishing treat, the Australian Campbell's of Rutherglen dessert wine is phenomenal.
