Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The cosy, low-ceilinged dining space is small and intimate, with pictures on the walls, a kitsch cabinet filled with the glasses and a wide open door opening onto the busy kitchen. From there, hisses, aromas and shouts all pour out. Also seen going in and out of said door is the host and owner – and the true star of the show – Dennis. The food is like fantastic, home-cooked cuisine: such as cod stuffed with a king prawn and scallop mouse or a supreme of chicken stuffed with Dingwall haggis and served with a whisky and mushroom cream sauce. Two hearty bowls of tasty roast potatoes and buttery, baby vegetables are plonked on the table between the already ample main courses. Desserts, such as the thick slab of lime cheesecake with mixed fruit coulis, are all home-made.

  • High point: Delightful food and a warm welcome
  • Low point: More home than haute cuisine

3. Stella Bridger, By the sea – 29 December 2010, 12:37am2 starsThe CabinReport

Was here in December for lunch with work friends. Took an hour for them to take our order, place was busy but only one person waiting. Got drinks order wrong and it went downhill from there. Food poorly cooked and overpriced for what was. Found the interior oppressive and staff surly and rude when asked questions. Will stay nearer the west end next time.

2. barnwell, glasgow – 10 February 2009, 3:48pmThe CabinReport

had dinner at the cabin recently and was sorely disappointed the food was ok but was cold when served. The host never came near the whole night we were ot asked if the meal was ok the waitress was the most surly person ever, the entertainment was supposed to start at 9 it didn,t start until 10 and people were already leaving. The cabin is now just another very average place to eat and is very overpriced for what you get which is a shame as in this day and age there are so many good restaurants in glasgow which could serve food every bit as good but cheaper.Think wilma was the novelty there, now i would avoid it and go elsewhere.

Best place in Glasgow for good food, good atmosphere and the best soda bread in the world. Made very welcome by the staff, enjoyed the personal attention and the good humour.
