As you cross the threshold of Manna's glassy, glossy Bath Street exterior, you enter a time warp. You're met at the door by throngs of courteous, waistcoated waiters, your jacket will be removed, and you'll be seated in a high-backed chair amid tasteful cream and dark wood furnishings, in a wide, airy dining room from a bygone age. Manna pulls in an older crowd, with money to splash out on wine and well-aged meat; and the chefs know their clientele. The menu feels slightly dated in places, studded with well-turned out versions of trusty classics like chicken supreme, Serrano ham with melon, or a sunblush tomato and pesto risotto. A starter of tiger prawns with mango, roast red peppers and 'exotic' leaves is a good example here: the dish may have been more fashionable in the 1990s, but the prawns are tenderly cooked and well balanced by the assorted flavours. There are also some hidden gems tucked away in there: flash-fried salmon fillet paired with a chickpea and almond curry is an intriguing, delicate choice. The service is impeccably mannered, almost French in its formality, and given the quality of the ingredients, the set lunch represents excellent value.
- High point: Proper old-fashioned Glasgow glamour
- Low point: Fairly steep prices don't include side dishes
