This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
The City Merchant has been serving up good food for over 20 years now. Although it may cater a little bit too much for tourists with its tartan on the walls and traditional Scottish fare, there are also touches of brilliance at great value – it's a Glasgow favourite for a reason. Some starters may lack a little originality, such as Cullen skink with meaty chunks of haddock, or a steamy mound of Dingwall haggis with champit tatties and bashed neeps – however, they make up for this in their flavour. As the main courses arrive, so does the culinary flare. For example, pan-seared fillets of soft, salty sea bass are delicately sweetened by a king prawn and Cointreu dressing and served atop moist, crunchy potato rosti. Alternatively, pink columns of venison loin are gamey and rich, balanced by a bubble and squeak mash and redcurrant jus. Desserts such as the Baileys chocolate mousse with orange peel syrup are simply mind blowing – it’s this type of simple yet appealing food which keeps people coming back.
- High point: Good quality at relatively good prices
- Low point: Caters more for tourists than foodies

Don't go there! You will get ripped off and the staff are quite rude.

Don't bother with this place as it serves some of the worst food I've ever had in a restauant anywhere. The oysters were so old and gross! The shell fish are full of stale water and the soup tastes like dirty dish water. Don't try to complain as the arogant owners think they have a real jewel there..what a joke..The Matteo family does not know the first thing about fine seafood food any food...stay far away form this over priced hole.

The City Merchant has everything that Scottish dining should include; a friendly welcome, good service, amazing fresh food which tantalises your tastebuds. It's one of my firm favourite restaurants in Glasgow, if not my favourite. I had seared king scallops with Stornoway black pudding as a starter, scallops so fresh they made my mouth water and then one of the specials seared tuna steak with mushroom risotto as a main. The wine list is varied and caters for all tastes. I can't fault this restaurant and would highly recommend it for a romantic evening or dinner with friends and family. I truly do hope that this establishment looks set to remain for years to come...!
