Eating & Drinking Guide 2009

This cute little brasserie tucked away in Charing Cross has been on the go for over 20 years now. The open kitchen, chalked-up specials on the blackboard and candles flickering on the tables all lend the establishment that certain je ne sais quoi of a French bistro, and diners seem suitably relaxed as they tuck into their food. The menu also leans towards the continent, with dishes such as ‘lapin a la moutarde’ – that is, slow-roasted rabbit with coarse-grain mustard, thyme, white wine and crème fraiche. However, dishes such as fish and chips in lime and beer batter or calves liver with bacon also give it a smack of good old Blighty too. Open all day, the restaurant also serves breakfast and puts on a slightly lighter lunch menu. And of course, the actual baby grand in the centre of the restaurant has its elegant ivories tinkled from Wednesday to Saturday by a rather good pianist.

  • High point: Relaxed bistro vibe
  • Low point: Right beside a strip joint
